A time to hate college football

Writing this while watching the Minnesota/Iowa college football game, but it really is no game. After 3 quarters, Iowa leads 48-0. I abhor lop-sided games at the college level, regardless of who is winning or losing. In the insanity that college sports has become, we forget what college is all about. I attended the University of Iowa long ago, so I’m not sorry to see them doing well. I watched them win over 3rd-ranked Penn State and shared their delight. Tonight is something completely different.

Because the Twin Cities has professional sports and innumerable other attractions, college sports doesn’t receive much attention. Contrast that with Iowa, where college sports reigns supreme. Because of that, it becomes something of a madness. When Iowa loses, one can almost feel a funk roll over the area.

Even such an awful loss (it’s now 55-0) will not have much impact on citizens of the Twin Cities, and Iowa City will feel great… so why do I hate such games? A terrible loss has an emotional impact on the students. It seems to me that they, the heart and purpose of a university, are the forgotten participants in the big-bucks and corrupt major sports programs. For many Minnesota students, this last game in the Metrodome will be a sour note for a long time.
