Tired of waiting?
I’ve been neglectful again, in not posting here. I’ve taken on a major project; pulling together family photos and creating a website for them. It has been, and will be, a lot of work. I’m improving the photos as much as possible, and collecting them from various sources. Some of them are truly impressive… studio portraits from around 1900. Initially the site will cover my mother’s parents and forward in time from there… divided into 50+ initial sections. That will cover the individuals in 3 generations descended from my grandparents.
This has grown out of our cousins reunions. We’ve had 3 so far and have each gotten to know first cousins and a few second cousins we only knew as names. I think that knowing our family background and those related to us is important. While it’s true that we don’t choose our relatives, they are the longest connections we can have, since they begin at birth. There is much to learn about our ancestors, and it is often fascinating. One of my grandmothers, although she grew up in backwoods Missouri, is descended from several Scottish kings.
It’s so easy for family information to become lost. Once lost, it can be impossible to retrieve. The more people know it, the more likely it is to be retained. By creating this website, and expanding it, I can make it available to an ever-increasing number of family members. A few in my generation are not on the web, but it’s likely that their children and grandchildren are. Photos I place on the website can be easily captured and printed by all those people, making them more likely to be retained long after I’m gone.
